"We sailed out of the consulting rooms and rescheduled our lives." I had been having lower back pain for several months and was gradually becoming less and less mobile. Getting out of the bath was difficult, putting on tights testing, and cutting my left toenails impossible. The pain got worse as the day wore on and became excruciating when sitting down for any length of time. After about one hour of playing bridge, for example, I had to get up - always in great pain, and never daring to put weight on my left leg as I knew it would give way.
Eventually I saw an orthopaedic specialist who took several X-rays said my back was not the problem, it was my hip. He diagnosed bad arthritis and he referred me to a consultant at the Norwich and Norfolk Hospital. When I saw him on May 8th he confirmed the diagnosis and we discussed the hip replacement operation. Nothing else would help he said, and, without it, the hip would gradually get worse. We scheduled the operation for June 10th. Although it was a sobering thought I was resigned and, in a way relieved - at least we knew what the problem was and, although I would have to have a general anaesthetic, a major operation and two months of quiet convalescence, the promise of being out of pain and having my old energetic life restored was worth it. We cancelled our summer holiday plans.
A couple of weeks later I sat next to a woman at a lunch party in London who was wearing a Bioflow bracelet. She told me how wonderful it was for arthritic pain relief and generally improved circulation, and that thirty of her friends had them - all with benefit. I sent off for a Bioflow and it turned out to be the best money I've ever spent. My pain was cut almost immediately with a resulting drop in pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs, I became more mobile - being able to cut my left toe nail with ease was a joy! After a week I was gardening and rushing about in my usual fashion. After three weeks I was not using any pain killers and had more energy than I'd had for several years. My daughter-in-law, a physiotherapist who had watched my progress, said, "Surely you're not going to have the operation now?" I replied gloomily that it was all fixed. "Why not ring your surgeon?" she suggested. I saw a surprised consultant later that day, told him the Bioflow story and said I was in a quandary about the operation. After he had examined me he said, "No you are not in a quandary. I will not operate. The diagnosis stays the same, but the symptoms have changed. Come back when you need to." We sailed out of the consulting rooms and rescheduled our lives. Mrs Rhodanthe Selous
