Technical Reports and Evaluations

The Central Reverse Polarity® magnetic technology, developed and patented by Ecoflow plc, is used in five different applications:

  • Magnotherapy, in the form of magnetic wristbands, bracelets and versatile belts for the relief of pain associated with arthritis, sciatica and associated joint and muscle ailments.
  • Collars and coats for dogs and cats and rugs, magnetic boots and tendon wraps for horses and ponies.
  • Personal protection from harmful radiation emitted by micro-wave ovens, television screens, computers and in particular, mobile phones.
  • Magnetic treatment of petrol and diesel fuels, to provide cleaner combustion, with improved economy and reduced harmful emissions.
  • Similar treatment of gas and fuel oil, to reduce heating and cooking costs in domestic and commercial boilers.

All the above applications have been the subject of scientifically controlled, independent tests and evaluations by reputable agencies such as the Arthritis Research Campaign and the DTI. Extracts from their reports are appended below.

Report No. 1 is an extract from the British Medical Journal on the test on Bioflow magnetic wrist bands and bracelets. The full transcript is available on the the BMJ website, via the link at the bottom of this page. It is a very comprehensive report but be warned, it is not an easy read!

Report No. 2 is a summary of the findings of the Environmental Laboratory of the DTI into tests on petrol and diesel fuels, used with the Thermoflow magnetic units.

Report No. 3 deals briefly with fuel economy in the Peking to Paris Classic Rally.

Report No. 4 highlights the problem of Fuel Poverty, from the website of Help the Aged.

Report No. 5 reveals the risks to future gas prices, now that the UK is a net importer of gas.

In addition to these independent examinations of Ecoflow technology, there is a huge amount of anecdotal evidence from users of these products, showing benefits ranging from the mild to the miraculous! There are countless examples of people taking up activities and hobbies which they had been forced to give up years before, due to the effects of arthritis and similar problems. Many people have reported giving up pain-relieving anti-inflammatory drugs which are known to have serious harmful side effects.

1. British Medical Journal Report on Bioflow Clinical Trial

In December 2004, the British Medical Journal published the results of a two year trial sponsored by The Arthritis Research Campaign into the use of Bioflow magnotherapy on osteoarthritis of the knee and hip.

The report documented this peer reviewed clinical trial in full. The BMJ insist on a high level of integrity in any trial they publish and this is the first peer reviewed trial in the world, directly related to specialist static magnets in regard to pain relief.

Extract from the BMJ Report:

What is already known on this topic?

  • Static magnets are widely used for the relief of pain.
  • Evidence about their efficacy in osteoarthritis is contradictory.
  • Placebo effects are particularly difficult to control because of the easy detection of magnetism.

What this study adds:

  • Bracelets with static magnets decrease the pain from osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, over and above the effects of placebo.
  • These benefits are supplementary to those from usual treatments.
  • The magnetic strength of the bracelet is important.

This is a copy of the press release used by Ecoflow when the research was published in December 2004:

"Cornish company, Ecoflow Plc, was celebrating today after the first ever independent clinical trial using the company’s ‘Bioflow’ magnets which use Central Reverse Polarity™ magnetic wristbands and bracelets confirmed that its unique magnetic properties do have a beneficial effect on pain.

The trial, funded by the Arthritis Research Campaign, was carried out on patients with arthritis of the hip and knee by a group of Mid Devon doctors. They decided to run the trial after hearing patient reports of pain relief from wearing the Bioflow magnets. The scientifically peer reviewed trial set out to establish whether or not there is indeed benefit beyond the placebo effect from using the special magnets for pain relief. It also sought to address problems and shortfalls that had been encountered during earlier inconclusive research into the use of magnotherapy.

Dr Tim Harlow who led the Mid Devon trial said: “Our results did show benefit to patients with arthritis of the hip and knee.”

He went on to stress: “It seems that not all magnets are the same in this context and we can only comment on the particular bracelets we studied. Of course nothing will work for everyone with arthritis but this result is encouraging for sufferers and these magnets do seem worth trying. The benefits seem to be additional to the effects of painkillers.” But he cautioned: “People should not suddenly stop their existing treatments without discussing it with their doctor.”

A full report of the findings has today been published in the British Medical Journal.

Since Saltash based Ecoflow first launched its Bioflow magnet in 1995, the weight of anecdotal evidence supporting use of the magnets for pain has been steadily mounting. The company has amassed files full of letters from people extolling the benefits of Bioflow in a range of symptoms and conditions.

Products containing the special magnets are also available for animals and these seem to work so successfully that many sceptics have had to retract the ‘placebo’ argument often levelled at the therapy. The arthritis trial findings will further strengthen belief in the usefulness of the Bioflow magnets.

Ecoflow chairman Paul Markland said: “The news today is of course wonderful for arthritis suffers but it confirms what we at Ecoflow have known for years – our unique Bioflow magnets really do work!” He added: “We are so confident that we sell them with a 90 day money back guarantee. That guarantee however is only available through our own network of registered independent distributors.” He emphasised: “We do not want to run the risk of inferior products being sold to people in pain on the back of this research. Anyone can contact our head office in Saltash for details of a registered distributor near them. They will then be certain that they are buying the genuine article carrying all the Ecoflow guarantees.”

The Bioflow is different from ordinary magnets because besides being very strong it incorporates Central Reverse Polarity™ a system unique to Ecoflow products. This was specifically designed to mimic the beneficial effects of professional electromagnetic units often used in hospitals.

Ecoflow is now actively expanding its distributor network in order to cope with the anticipated increased demand for Bioflow magnets."

2. Government Test on Fuel Economy and Emissions

When the British Government's environmental laboratory was approached to test the Ecoflow fuel conditioner in 1992, the laboratory initially suggested it would be a waste of time and money, the product could not work and there was insufficient scientific research to support it.

However, after seeing countless testimonials from satisfied customers, the laboratory agreed to design a test that would "have an acceptable degree of accuracy and respectability" on condition that the Department of Environment retained full rights to the results.

The test was actually carried out over 12,000 miles on a petrol engined car as well as test bed running and a diesel engined truck was tested for emissions over 10,000 miles.

The results of the tests fully supported the manufacturer's claims for the product and despite the Department of Environment making restrictions on the reporting of the results to support the marketing of the product, they did eventually agree that the following wording could be used:

The DTI's Environmental Technology Executive Agency Laboratory's tests on the Ecoflow fitted to a Vauxhall Cavalier showed fuel consumption improved, power increased and emissions reduced. A Volvo F10 truck, tested for particulate smoke emissions showed a decrease of 15%.

3. The Peking to Paris Classic Rally

Recent years have also seen an increasing amount of additives in fuel on the understanding that they help reduce the impact on the environment. But do they? They certainly reduce the amount of actual energy available from each litre you buy, because part of each litre is additives and cleaning agents.

During the 1997 Peking to Paris Classic Rally, competitors were experiencing a much improved fuel consumption from Chinese 90 Octane fuel, compared to the 'refined' fuel of Europe. In the case of the Ecoflow entry, using a Ford 1600cc engine, this improvement from the 'lower grade' fuel averaged 26%.

The question is, does the fuel with additives reduce the pollution produced from each litre by a greater percentage than the reduction of available energy from the fuel, or is it just a cheaper fuel to produce?

4. Fuel Poverty

A recent survey by Help the Aged reports that two and a half million pensioners face a daily struggle to pay huge council tax bills. Many are economising on food or heating, with one in four of those over 65 having either to 'cut back on basics, borrow money or go into debt' to pay the bill.

This is an extract from the website of Help the Aged:

"A household is defined as living in fuel poverty if it would have to spend more than 10 per cent of its disposable income on maintaining a decent level of warmth at home. Over a million fuel-poor households (more than half the UK total) contain older people.

Help the Aged believes that fuel poverty is a significant contributing factor to between 20,000 and 50,000 'excess' winter deaths that occur in the older population every year. We want action to be taken to tackle fuel poverty and to address the problem of older people living in cold, damp homes".

There is a Policy Statement, entitled 'The UK Winter Deaths Scandal' available on their website.

There are several ways to combat this problem of cold homes:

  • Improve Draught-proofing and Insulation. (But that costs money).
  • Change your supplier, by going to someone like Uswitch, who will do most of it for you.
  • Make your boiler work more efficiently, by fitting a Thermoflow unit.

5. The Ever Rising Price of Gas

"Domestic bills likely to be forced up"

January 2006. The Guardian

A Russian gas supply crisis triggered warnings last night that UK householders will face further significant price increases in 2006. Growing unease over future energy security in Britain also led to calls for a quick decision on a new generation of nuclear power stations.

Analysts predict that, as things stand, by 2020 almost 70% of Britain's electricity generation will be reliant on gas imported from countries such as Russia.

Many homeowners began the new year yesterday with a 14.5% rise in their bills, but British Gas said a 40% increase in wholesale prices since September made further rises inevitable. The latest energy scare came yesterday when Russia cut its supplies of gas to Ukraine in a row over pricing. The shortages and accompanying political row threatened to spill into continental Europe, which gets a quarter of its gas from Russia via a pipeline through Ukraine.

A spokesman for British Gas, which controls 55% of the UK residential market, said: "No decisions have been made yet, but across the industry suppliers are looking at their pricing because of steep increases in wholesale costs in the last quarter. "Most suppliers recognise that they [the price increases] will feed through to the retail market to some degree," he added, arguing that his company's residential energy business made a financial loss in the last six months.

British Gas lost 1 million customers in 2004 and 670,000 in 2005 on the back of a 14.2% rise in bills from September 2005, plus a 12.4% hike in September 2004. There was also a 5.9% rise in January of that year. Yesterday, rival Scottish & Southern Energy put an extra 13.6% - around £50 a year - on domestic gas bills, while npower put up its prices by 14.5% for gas, the equivalent of around £58.

The consumer group, energywatch, warned suppliers that there was "no excuse" to use the Russian problems as a reason to unleash another round of price rises during 2006. "We don't draw very much gas at all, well none, from that part of the world, and there are lots of other sources of gas for us.

However, it might put a bit of pressure on prices there and, sadly, the gas and oil companies are always looking for excuses to ramp up prices," energywatch's chief executive, Allan Asher, told the BBC.

Energy minister Malcolm Wicks said the dispute posed "no immediate threat" to UK supplies but he conceded it could impact on gas prices. "There is no immediate threat to gas supplies in the UK; none of the UK's gas is imported directly from Russia." British Gas admitted that the Russian problems had not had any discernible impact yet on British prices, but said a range of other earlier problems had already made its business unprofitable. These included the rundown in UK North Sea supplies, a lack of sufficient existing infrastructure to import liquefied natural gas, plus the stranglehold of large French and German monopolies controlling pipelines in mainland Europe.

The crisis in Ukraine has highlighted the need for Britain to have indigenous supplies, such as nuclear, the former UK energy minister Brian Wilson told the Guardian yesterday. "This [crisis] could have a short-term impact on gas supplies and prices in the European Union but long-term it points up a more serious issue of Britain's reliance on imported gas," he said. By 2020, 70% of UK electricity will come from gas and 90% of that will have to be imported.

A substantial amount - at least a third - will come from Russia and confidence in that must depend on Russia honouring its contracts."
